News and Newberry

We had a wonderful meeting in August at Evanston Print and Paper.  It was good to reconnect and exciting to realize that our members want to keep Hand Bookbinding a vital art form.

The first priority for CHB will be to develop a successful 30th Anniversary show for 2009.  It can draw from the wealth of stunning CHB works from the past and introduce dramatic contemporary works from today’s hand bookbinders.  The theme for the show, “Chicago Hand Bookbinders, This is Who We Are,” will allow for the many creative interpretations of our artists.

The goals of CHB will fall short without supportive board members.  Eileen and Sheila have been accepted as Exhibition Chairs.  Becky has been accepted as part-time Secretary. Volunteers are still much needed for the positions of Program Chair and an additional Secretary.  Duties for Program chair include the arrangement of sites and themes for our bimonthly meetings.  Previous meetings have included demonstrations, tours of collections or exhibits, and social events.  Duties for secretary include writing minutes, newsletters, and additional communication.

To encourage previous members to rejoin the organization and due to the small number of meetings and newsletters which were offered in 2008, members in good standing for 2008 will not be required to pay membership dues for 2009.  New members and those who have let their membership lapse for 2008 will only need to pay the $20 yearly fee for 2009.  If you have any questions about the status of your membership, please email Ellen at treasurer@chicagohandbookbinders.com.

Have a Heart for Animals promises to be an exciting event for showcasing hand bound art books from CHB.  Proceeds will be donated to the Red Door Animal Shelter.  Please see the information in the Have A Heart page and join in the Forum for updates.

The next CHB meeting will be at 6 o’clock on October 14th  at the Newberry library. We will be viewing archive materials in the library’s collection.  It should be inspiring to see treasures from the CHB past.

Let’s plan to get together, then, and move our organization forward.  We will discover (and re-discover) hand bookbinding and make sure that its place as a meaningful art form is not forgotten.
